From the twelfth until the nineteenth century, Finland was a part of the Kingdom of Sweden. When Sweden lost the war against Russia in 1809, Finland became an autonomous Grand Duchy of Imperial Russia.  In December 6, 1917, Finland declared its independence from Russia following the October Revolution.
