Frank Gehry’s Schnabel House

For about $13 M, you can bid on this Frank Gehry creation built for the Former Ambassador to Finland, Rockwell Schnabel. This Brentwood, California residence later became home to the Tony-Award winning Broadway Producer, Jon Platt.

The house–which features a sauna, a reflecting pool, as well as an Olympic size lap pool–is “the design I had fantasized for my own house,” according to the architect.

    this seems unusual for a Gehry job. it’s so neat, and geometrically balanced. i’ve seen the Peter B. Lewis Building up close and personal. it and other commercial bulidings by Gehry are so warped and bent…curved. this is …different from that.

      Yeah, I was surprised when I saw this house. It is delightfully more understated than some of Gehry’s other garish (Gehrish!) concoctions. I should say that I have never seen a Gehry building in person that I can remember…but I am sort of opposed to the new star-chitecture craze. On the one hand, it is wonderful that Gehry’s building in Bilbao helped rejuvenate its tourist revenue, but in terms of the architecture itself, it is so loud–it looks like a some kind of deranged mess of a building.
