Flowers for Finland

6 Dec

Hyvää Itsenäisyyspäivää!

Today, Finland celebrates its 93rd birthday! This is a solemn holiday here; shops are closed and people seem to be hiding indoors. The Finnish flags have been raised and there is a Military Procession from the cemetery to the Presidential Palace to honor fallen soldiers. Tonight’s gala at the Presidential Palace is televised so many Finns get together to watch the country’s elite gather to shake the President’s hand.

It has been steadily snowing all day long I’m using this free day to get organized, catch up on some studying and of course, make some little paintings in my room.

Happy birthday, Finland!

I really love this picture, it is stark and intense at the same time, it really makes me pause.

It is going to cold (for Atlanta) for the next week or so, high’s in the 30’s, low’s in the 20’s. I love the cold weather as it slows down life and helps you refocus, especially inward. Most of the best hikes in my life have been in very, very cold weather, it really does soothe my soul.
