The Comet Chaser

15 Sep

Today, I saw the movie Moomins and the Comet Chaser in the theater. This animated film is based on the cartoon by the Finnish illustrator/writer Tove Jansson. It was shown in Finnish, without subtitles. Suffice to say that my understanding was sketchy at best, but this trailer (in English) shed some light.

The Moomins are a family of trolls resembling white hippos. They live in the woods in Moominvalley and like many Finns, they have a close relationship with the natural world. In this stop-motion movie, the Moomins encounter many hardships as they try to evade the path of a burning orange comet.

The artist Björk, who read the Moomin series as a child and read these stories to her own children, is a big fan of the Moomins. She created “The Comet Song” for the soundtrack and it is totally stellar! I’m 99% sure that she says “damn it, oh comet” numerous times throughout the song, making it possibly the only children’s song with profanity that comes to mind.

Josephine LOVED watching that clip of those adorable Moomins. She said “hi!” to them several times. In fact, she loved it so much it made me feel a guilty for letting her watch it (i.e. is this too much TV exposure for her young brain? will she be sensorily spoiled by these aupercute Moomins and then not find her two-dimension books exciting any more? is she going to need to see them in theatres as soon as they arrive?)

I’ll buy her some Moomindolls! And when you visit, we can take her to see Moominworld:

P.S. Did the Björk song freak Josie out?

Ummmm, the Bjork song kind of freaked me out so I didn’t even show it to her. And yes, I wanted to show Td how much she loves the Moomins so we showed her the video again this morning and it’s confirmed, she’s smitten!
