United Buddy Bears

“We have to get to know each other better …
… it makes us understand one another better,
trust each other more, and live together more peacefully.”

-The United Buddy Bear Motto

The United Buddy Bears project is a traveling exhibition to promote world peace. Artists from all over the world designed bears to represent individual countries. There are nearly one hundred and forty bears and each bear is two meters tall. Together, these bears have traveled the world, raising money for charity since 2002. Helsinki is the twentieth stop for the exhibition and the most northern destination for the bears. They will be on display in Senate Square until October 26, 2010.

Below are some of the my favorite bears.

Moldova

South Korea

Kazakstan

Pakistan

I love these Buddy Bears (which reads to me like a poor translation of Care Bears). Do they do a Buddy Bear Stare? Also, love the vest on the Pakistani bear, which is accentuated by the little belly button decal. Soo cute.

Some of them are really well executed, and then other bears are less inspired. The US’s bear is dressed like the Statue of Liberty. While that makes total sense, it’s such a literal representation of the US instead of bringing together more fascination aspects of its culture. Canada’s bear is this weird all over pixelated pattern. I can’t think of what that might mean for Canada. I think I might be going back today to see the backs of the all the bears. We were so cold that we mostly looked at the front of the bears yesterday!
